FINALLY, Riyadi are crowned Asia Champions
By FIBA Asia Press Release - Published: June 5, 2011

JPEGMANILA (2011 FIBA Asia Champions Cup) - Al Riyadi Beirut kept their poise down the stretch on Sunday to beat two-time defending champions Mahram 91-82 and win their first-ever 2011 FIBA Asia Champions Cup medal at the PhilSports Arena.

Fadi El Khatib celebrated his fourth FIBA Asia Champions Cup gold medal – his first since helping Sagesse win seven years ago – by scoring a tournament-high 40 points to end the four-year hold Iranian teams have had on the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

Al Riyadi became the first Lebanese team to win the competition since Sagesse in 2004.

The two teams fought tooth and nail for the first three quarters, by the end of which Mahram were up 58-57.

El Khatib opened the final frame with a three-pointer and Jean Abdel Nour - Riyadi’s talisman this season - took over thereafter, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to put Riyadi firmly ahead.

Abdel Nour scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Ismail Ahmad (right in picture) finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds in the winning effort.

Amir Saoud leads his Team to victory against Jalaa
By FIBA Asia Press Release - Published: June 2, 2011

MANILA, Philippines (22nd FIBA Asia Champions Cup): With everything – including their No 1 position in Group B – assured Al Riyadi Beirut coach Fouad Abouchakra used only his ‘bench’ for the entire duration, yet the Lebanese giants proved more than a handful to Syria’s Al Jala’a and closed their Prelim Round engagements with a 86-73 win on Wednesday.

Riyadi take on fellow WABA team Duhok of Iraq in the quarterfinal, while Jala’a wait for the No 1 team of the Group A – the winners of the final Prelim game between Smart Gilas and ASU.

Youngster Amir Saoud played his first full game for Al Riyadi and led their charge with a game-high 28 points. Seasoned guard Omar El Turk “had fun” and returned 18 for his 40 minutes stay.

Rodrigue and the team win over Rayyan in overtime
By FIBA Asia Press Release - Published: May 31, 2011

MANILA, Philippines (22nd FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Al Riyadi Beirut reserved their best for the end and unleashed a 20-9 run in the final ten minutes – including a 8-3 advantage in the Overtime – to beat last year’s runners-up Al Rayyan 78-73 in a needle Group B game on Tuesday.

Rodrigue Akl (dark jersey in pic above), on loan from Anibal for this competition, capped a 12-6 Riyadi run in the final five minutes to lock the game at 70-all at the end of Regulation time.

And in the extended period, Akl pulled down three of Riyadi’s defensive rebounds to deny Rayyan any extra room.

“Am I lucky to have thought of borrowing him!” wondered Riyadi coach Fouad Abouchakra.

“In these two games, he (Akl) has been a real worthy,” he added connecting Akl’s contribution to regular point guard Ali Mahmoud’s absence – due to a sore back – in the last two games.

“Like yesterday (when Riyadi beat defending champions Mahram 76-73), my team played a lot together. They stood up for each other when chips were down, and I think that was the key to our win today,” he added.

Down by six points – by 9 at one point in time in the second quarter – Riyadi did more than well to hold their own.

“We missed out on their offensive rebounds,” bemoaned Rayyan coach Brian Rowsom.

Riyadi had a 21-13 offense rebound advantage – in an overall 50-37 boards.
